Yes, I did record three songs today. :)
This was the second transcription I did in my recent transcription "Marathon" starting in April of 2020. (The first one being "Kid Gloves".) It hadn't been high on my list to transcribe, since I had downloaded a rough outline transcription of it. But the rough transcription wasn't great to play along with and I wanted it to be note for note, so I decided to make my own version.
It's a slower tempo for Rush, but it's very heavy. Because of the slower tempo, Neil is able to make the bass drum part more rhythmically interesting with plenty of 16th notes in each groove he plays. Also of note is the odd time signature sections. I always try to notate them so they are easy to read and play, even if they don't always follow the guitar/bass riffs.
The heavy groove is on loose hi hat (sometimes closed) and then there's a contrasting section where he moves to the ride and includes a couple 16th notes in the midst of the main 8th note ostinato.
There are some small little details which are great. Some ghost notes here, a couple notes on double bass there...a couple little cymbal crescendos, once on the china, another time on the ride and moving towards the bell. And in the closed HH sections, he makes it slightly loose at certain points, just a note or two. I love the little details that Neil puts in his parts. It was great to discover them all with my transcription project. It's like examining a painting of one of the great masters and noticing all the details and colors and subtle things that you don't see with a more casual look from a distance.
Because of the slower tempo, it was easier to get all of those little details in the recording and I got most of them. This was a first take, as were Tai Shan and High Water that I recorded before this one today.
